Grozilla: Our Amazing Indoor Growing Machine

Grozilla is a game-changing growing machine that gives us the ability to rapidly scale up our capacity while having a unique high-tech teaching tool for aspiring growers and farmers.

Developing an urban agrisystem in the Dallas area, we recognize that a sustainable & resilient future should include elements of CEA – or “controlled environment agriculture” — as it is far less water, soil, and resource intensive.

With our unstable climate, rising temperatures, and increased drought conditions already impacting food production, we need to blend traditional in-ground farming with more controlled farming techniques. CEA can be in the form of hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics or vertical farming — technologies that will produce more food, more consistently, in both a faster and safer way. Again, with less water than traditional agriculture.

Grozilla is currently producing a wealth of delicious, homegrown produce and is a major first-step CEA platform to learn from, teach from, and experiment with. Ultimately it contributes to our overall economic impact along with the other components in our system which includes the successful deployment of the MLK Seedling Farm greenhouse (at the MLK Center in South Dallas) and our Hatcher Station Training Farm, both of which are traditional growing platforms.

Grozilla is a 15-ton, 16’ x 40’ growing machine operating 24/7 via a state of the art LED light fueled, shallow pond hydroponic growing platform. It is a one-of-a-kind unit that is singularly well suited for state-of-the-art future farming. From seed to harvest takes about 28 days. And with a staggered growing cycle, our CEA pros and interns harvest hundreds of heads of fresh, healthy greens every week.

Microgreens

We’re proud to provide these fresh, healthy, awesomely nutritious microgreens to the elementary students of DISD and their families through the Brighter Bites program as well as to the greater community through our CSA program and general sales.

While they look like a minature forest, microgreens grow super fast and are packed with great benefits (see below!) to keep you energized as well as to add color & flavor to just about any meal you can think of.

Seriously, you can put them on top of your pizza, mix into your pasta, sprinkle on mashed potatoes, charge up your morning eggs, pile on your chicken & fish, spice up any salad, and yes eat them completely raw right out of your hands!
