Timeline of Milestones
• November 2017: MLK Seedling Farm at the MLK community Center (Component 1.)
• May 2019: With the help of DART we secured grant and land at transit hub - Hatcher Station, across from Parkland South Dallas Health Clinic. Working with Frazier Revitalization, Inc. (FRI) received a City of Dallas Economic Development Loan to put in place Dallas’ first professional production & training farm. Received matching fund from private donors and SMU Meadows School of Arts. (Component 2)
• December 2019: Launched Hatcher Station Training Farm. With FRI invited and opened to community. (Component 3.)
• Late March 2020: In response to Covid-19, we shifted component project timeline. Launched GroBox business (also manufactured in South Dallas) to sell seedlings and keep farmers and furloughed farmers employed. SMU student help design and build e-commerce platform (Component 4, originally planned as component 8). FRI and RF receive seed funding from Love, Tito’s as well as support from Lyda Hill Foundation and North Texas Cares.
• August 2020: RF wrote a plan for future USDA grant for the coalition of South & West Dallas food desert churches (working with Reverend Peter Johnson) to build and support a garden network with Hatcher Station Farm as training and supply hub.
• September 2020: Hatcher become emerging Farm Aggregation Hub. After months of preparation and installation we piloted a CSA program locally sourced, and produced at Hatcher far. First set of CSA veggie boxes in 2020 pilot go to Kosmos Energy employees. This project was life-line for 7 local farms including Hatcher that lost their livelihood due to Covid shutting down farmers markets and restaurants. (Components 5 & 6.)
• October 2020: Partner with Tito’s Vodka and launched National Food Desert GroBox Program. Pilot in four cities. This opportunity was made available three years ahead of schedule in part thanks to success (with the Tito’s seed grant) to distribute GroBoxes in Dallas during Covid 19.
• November 2020: Restorative Farms purchases GroZilla, a 15-ton, 16’ x 40’, 24/7 growing machine with a state of the art LED light fueled, shallow pond hydroponic growing platform. It is a one-of-a-kind unit that is singularly well-suited for research, food production, and teaching. Funded and partnered with Green Mountain Energy’s Sun Club, State Fair of Texas & Big Tex Urban Farms. (Component 7.)
• December 2020: Installed a GroBox based farm at Austin Street Shelter (farm we have co-managed since 2017). St. Marks & Kosmos volunteers. Funding support from Kosmos Energy.
2021
• January 2021: Began build of infrastructure at Hatcher Station Farm including 4 hoop houses. Build storage containers. Finish vegetable Wash Station at Hatcher. (Component 8.)
• January 2021: Received funding (Texas Irish Foundation) for Community CSA pilot project to be run March 2021 to July 2021 & September 2021 to December. (Component 9.)
• February 2021: Developed a Walk-In cooler (research on how to make it solar power so technology can be adopted internationally to save produce perishing). Walk-in will expand the capacity of Hatcher Farm Aggregation Hub. (Component 10.)
• March 2021: Start the SMU in-residence volunteer engagement initiative.
• March 2021: Spring Kosmos and Community CSA program expanded to 75 weekly CSA for 14 weeks.
• June 2021: Install Netafim smart irrigation system at Hatcher.
• September 2021: Fall CSA Kosmos, Community CSA expanded to include partner distribution hub: SMU and Well Grounded Coffee. 14 week CSA program.
• September 2021: Apprentice GroBox Farm installs 500 GroBoxes for RF apprentice to apply for training: plan and grow to the market for themselves with RF support. (Component 11.)
• October 2021: Partnered with Green Careers Dallas to use Hatcher farm as local install training site for community solar power panel installers.
• November 2021: Hatcher Farm as location for first 1st annual Restorative Farm Harvest Weekend including Farm to Table brunch with food influencer Defined Dish sponsored by Love, Tito’s.
• November 2021: Restorative Farm Harvest Weekend Community Thanksgiving Fixins’ Baskets = 100 Thanksgiving CSAs with turkeys. Partnership with Whole Foods Market and Frazier Revitalization.
• December 2021: South Dallas Test Market Project: in partnership with Frasier Revitalization, Restorative Farms, SMU Hunt Institute and local food entrepreneurs. Trailer Store “Evie” will serve as a temporary produce and fresh food storefront in South Dallas to help analyze customer preferences, demand and value chain dynamics. The ultimate objective is to assess the community appeal and economic viability of a permanent fresh food store option.

o GroBoxes distributed nationally : 195 (Austin, San Antonio, Nashville & Philadelphia). In partnership with Love Tito’s. Retail value of donated boxes : $26325.
Produce Grown, Aggrigated and Delviered to Dallas Households
o Variety of Seasonal Vegtables Produced: 92.
o CSAs (weekly produce boxes): Fall 2020: 700, Spring 2021: 1050, Fall 2021: 868. Total: 2618.
o Average number local grown products per CSA: 11. Total: 28798.
o Average weight of produce per CSA: 8.3lbs Total: 21,467lb.
o Average Retail Value per CSA = $68. Total retail value= $178,024.
o Community (South Dallas CSA) households: Fall 2020: 25, Spring 2021: 40, Fall 2021: 37, Total: 102 households.
o Community (South Dallas) CSA Totals: 1428 CSAs, 5716 people, 11852 lbs of produce and $97,104 retail value.
o Local farms (product being aggregated) contributing to CSA: 11
o Community Thanksgiving Baskets CSAs: 100 households. Total Retail Value: $16,500
Community Economic Investment
o 100% of Salaried and paid team members are South Dallas Residents.
o 1 Full time manager. 6 paid vocational trainees. 5 formerly incarcerated.
o 2020&21 Payroll for these community employees: $177,037
o Paid vocational training hours: 6250
o Investment in apprentice farm for trainees: $43200
o Invesment in Hydroponic training for Grozilla (container growing): $172000
o Purchase of local product (market for local growers & food entrep.): $36652
o 31% of all materials purchased for farm operation and start up from South Dallas businesses.
Investement :
100% of all donated funds & grants are invested directly into the project: A. RF infrastruce improvements- system components, B. Salaries for framers, training farmers and South Dallas community team members. C. To buy vetables and products from local farmers, our apprentice farmers or South Dallas based food entrupenures. D. To subsidize community CSAs (weekly produce packs) to be sold in South Dallas at affordable prices. Restorative management is 100% donated services by the RF leasership team. Donated funds do NOT pay overhead (insurance, ultilites, rent, professional services) we do, as it is paid for thorugh revenue generated by our farms.
